What is Marine Corps Health Promotion all about? |
|
Annually,
the Marine Corps separates an average of over 7,000
Marines because of physical disability or misconduct.
Together, separations from abuse of alcohol and weight
control average an additional 789 Marines per year.
On average, another 108 Marines die per year, most
because of motor vehicle accidents, but one out of four
(approximately 21) by taking their own life.
In all, almost 8,000 Marines per year are lost due to
death, physical disability, misconduct, alcohol, medical
retirement, and weight control. The estimated dollar
value for these losses (annually) is roughly $983
million. The manpower burden is equivalent to TWO
INFANTRY REGIMENTS.
The Health Promotion goal is to continuously
improve the use of, and trends in, healthy lifestyles
and behaviors as reported by the DoD Survey of Health
Related Behaviors Among Military Personnel, the primary
indicator of health trends in the Marine Corps. This
will reduce the attrition statistics shown above. |

Suicide Prevention |
The USMC sees approximately 27 suicide
completions each year. On the average, MCAS
Cherry Point sees 2-4 suicide completions each
year. For every suicide completion, there are
at least ten (10) suicide incidents (gestures,
attempts). For the USMC, we see approximately
300 suicide incidents each year. At MCAS Cherry
Point, we see approximately 20-40 suicide
incidents each year, affecting our active duty
population
Listed below are the USMC and MCAS Cherry Point
statistics in suicide completions from
2001-2006.

While MCAS Cherry Points rate has remained
stable, there is much more work to be done in
educating our Marines in identifying early
warning signs and preventing all suicidal
incidents here at MCAS Cherry Point.
Historically, the number of suicides at MCAS
Cherry Point represented about 10-15% of the
total number of suicides completed in the entire
USMC. Therefore, we need to keep up our efforts
and continue to be proactive in order to be more
effective in our prevention and early
intervention education programs. While the total
completed incidences at MCAS Cherry Point
declined over the past years, all would agree
any amount of suicides are too many. With the
promotion of prevention education, the incident
rates will continue to decline. Everyone is
encouraged to be part of the solution. Please
contact the Semper Fit Center (466-6467) for
information on Suicide Prevention.
