What is Marine Corps Health Promotion all about? |
|
Annually, the Marine Corps separates an average of
over 7,000 Marines because of physical disability or
misconduct.
Together, separations from abuse of alcohol and weight
control average an additional 789 Marines per year.
On average, another 108 Marines die per year, most
because of motor vehicle accidents, but one out of four
(approximately 21) by taking their own life.
In all, almost 8,000 Marines per year are lost due to
death, physical disability, misconduct, alcohol, medical
retirement, and weight control. The estimated dollar
value for these losses (annually) is roughly $983
million. The manpower burden is equivalent to TWO
INFANTRY REGIMENTS.
The Health Promotion goal is to continuously
improve the use of, and trends in, healthy lifestyles
and behaviors as reported by the DoD Survey of Health
Related Behaviors Among Military Personnel, the primary
indicator of health trends in the Marine Corps. This
will reduce the attrition statistics shown above. |

Suicide Prevention |
The USMC sees approximately 27 suicide
completions each year. On the average, MCAS
Cherry Point sees up to 4 suicide completions
each year. For every suicide completion, there
are at least ten (10) suicide incidents
(gestures, attempts). For the USMC, we see
approximately 300 suicide incidents each year.
At MCAS Cherry Point, we see upwards of 40
suicide incidents each year, affecting our
active duty population
Listed below are the USMC and MCAS Cherry Point
statistics in suicide completions from
2001-2009.

While MCAS Cherry Points rate has remained
stable, there is much more work to be done in
educating our Marines in identifying early
warning signs and preventing all suicidal
incidents here at MCAS Cherry Point.
Historically, the number of suicides at MCAS
Cherry Point represented about 7-15% of the
total number of suicides completed in the entire
USMC. Therefore, we need to keep up our efforts
and continue to be proactive in order to be more
effective in our prevention and early
intervention education programs. While the total
completed incidences at MCAS Cherry Point
declined over the past years, all would agree
any amount of suicides are too many. With the
promotion of prevention education, the incident
rates will continue to decline. Everyone is
encouraged to be part of the solution. Please
contact the Semper Fit Center (466-6467) for
information on Suicide Prevention.

What is a Bone Mineral Density test?
A bone mineral density (BMD) test
measures the density of minerals (such
as
calcium)
in your bones using a special
X-ray,
computed tomography (CT) scan,
or
ultrasound.
This information is used to estimate the
strength of your bones.
We all lose some bone mass as we age.
Bones naturally become thinner (called
osteopenia)
as you grow older because existing bone
is broken down faster than new bone is
made. As this occurs, our bones lose
calcium and other minerals and become
lighter, less dense, and more porous.
This makes the bones weaker and
increases the chance that they might
break (fracture).
With further bone loss, osteopenia leads
to
osteoporosis.
So the thicker your bones are, the
longer it takes to get osteoporosis.
Although osteoporosis can occur in men,
it is most common in women older than
age 65.
If your bone density is lower than
normal, you can take steps to increase
your bone strength and reduce your
chances of having a fracture. Some ways
to increase bone density and strength
include combining calcium and vitamin D
supplements with weight-bearing exercise
(such as walking), weight training (such
as lifting weights or using weight
machines), and using medicines. After
menopause,
women can use
hormone therapy
and other medications to increase bone
density.
There are several different ways to
measure BMD. One way to measure is by
ultrasound.
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Ultrasound.
This test is generally used to look for
problems. If results from an ultrasound
test find low bone density, DEXA is
recommended to confirm the results.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to measure
BMD, in your heel. Ultrasound is quick,
painless, and does not use potentially
harmful radiation like X-rays.
What do I need to do to make an appointment?
Call the Semper Fit Center 466-6467/7201
to schedule an appointment. This
service is available to all eligible
patrons (active duty/reservist/retired,
military family members, and DoD
employees and their family members) |
