This program assists service members in providing for the
special needs of their Exceptional Family Member (EFM)
before, during and after relocation required by a change of
duty station. An Exceptional Family Member is defined as any
authorized family member (spouse, child, stepchild, adopted
child, foster child or dependent parent) residing with the
sponsor who possesses a physical, intellectual or emotional
disability and requires special medical or educational
services. The program ensures every attempt is made to mesh
military career and special family needs whenever possible.
The EFM program is a mandatory program per MCO P1754.4B. The
purpose of the program is to assist assignment monitors at
HQMC in assigning Marines to an area where the needs or
their EFM can be met.
The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)
has implemented a program allowing for
up to 40 hours of care monthly for
enrolled family members who have a
qualifying condition and are impacted by
the GWOT.
