Hello, I am Colonel
Doug Denn, Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Air Station
Cherry Point, North Carolina. For those countries
participating in this Women's CISM Volleyball World Military
Championship, welcome to one of the world's premiere Marine
Corps air stations!
While you are here, we hope you will enjoy the southern
hospitality for which the Crystal Coast is well known. The
men and women of Cherry Point are honored and excited to
serve as your hosts for this important event. Our planning
committee has been working diligently to ensure this event
runs smoothly. Our lodging, food services and transportation
are prepared to offer you world class service for all
athletes, team officials, referees and CISM committee
members. Our goal is to set a high standard for future CISM
world championships.
The athletes will be staying at facilities centrally located
to the dining facilities, playing courts, convenience store
and recreation centers; all within a short walking distance.
Cherry Point has a long history of hosting athletic events
as we have been honored to serve as hosts for a large
variety of Armed Forces and regional events in the past
several years. The actual match venues will be located at
our newly renovated facility aptly named the "Marine Dome".
We believe this is one of the finest athletic facilities of
any Marines Corps installations worldwide. Some of the
improvements, such as new hardwood floors, remodeled locker
rooms, lounges and new scoreboards, are sure to provide an
outstanding environment for your athletic needs.
Before closing I would like to provide a little background
about our great installation.
Situated only twenty miles from some of the Atlantic's most
beautiful beaches, MCAS Cherry Point is approximately ninety
miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, at the foot of the great
Outer Banks. Located in Havelock North Carolina, Cherry
Point was originally commissioned in 1942, and is currently
home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. You will be staying on
one of the best all weather jet bases in the world. The air
station and its associated support locations occupy nearly
30,000 acres and our runway system is so large that we serve
as an alternate emergency landing site for the NASA Space
Shuttle.
In the spirit of CISM's motto "Friendship through Sports,"
we look forward to meeting you in May.
